Natsume went on a school trip to a hot spring reserve. Shigeru-san, his guardian parent entrusted him to pick up some tea cups which he ordered from a pottery nearby the hot springs. While walking in the forest to the pottery, he bumped into a young fox spirit who was being driven out by two other spirits. He beat them up on the young fox spirit's behalf and chastised them for picking on the helpless spirit.
The fox spirit who was taught to fear humans quickly ran and hide. However, he was fascinated by Natsume and ended up following Natsume around (this does seems to happen a lot to Natsume-kun huh? Good thing he attracts a good number of kind spirits as well). As the tea cups were not ready the last time he went to pick them up, Natsume had to pay a visit to the pottery again. However, it starting pouring heavily halfway up the mountains and Natsume had to stop and find shelter. The young fox offered him a huge leaf (I have no idea what leaf that was) to act as an umbrella. To spirit's surprise and pleasure, Natsume thanked him for it.
The next day, while telling his deceased mother about Natsume, the two bad spirits appeared again and tried to drive the young fox out of the forest. But Natsume came to the rescue! Right after that, Natsume heard a voice calling him to return its name. The bad spirits ran after finding out that Natsume was the owner of the Book of Friends as they thought he wanted to enslave them. The young fox spirit offered to be a subordinate but Natsume kindly refused.
One day, after Natsume had left for home, a spirit appeared in front of the young fox spirit to offer a deal. If the fox spirit could catch as many fishes and let him eat to his heart's content, he would teach the fox spirit a way to meet Natsume. Its hard work earned it a special medicine which could turn him human for a day. Off he sets to look for Natsume. When he saw Natsume happily having dinner with his adopted family, he decided to turn back and head for home. Natsume, having the keen sixth sense that he has, noticed the presence of the fox spirit and caught up with him. Him thanked the spirit for coming to see him and sent the fox back home.
Omg, this has got to be one of the most touching episodes. Look at them hugging each other. Oohhh... I so love human-animals. ^^ Even I felt a warm feeling in me watching the two of them. The poor fox spirit. T___T
