Strange things started to happen. Every morning when Natsume wakes up, he will find flower petals strewn all over his bed and floor. One night, Natsume decided to stay up and catch the culprit. And no, Nyanko sensei I don't think a fish net will be of any help at all. LOL :P In the middle of the night, a spirit appeared from the ceiling and threw a bunch of flower petals into the room. She was caught by the two of them and Natsume demanded for an explanation.
The flowers were an offering to her dear one who lives in the painting. She had misplaced the painting and a human who found it had sold it off. And now it hangs on Natsume's wall. She asks Natsume to return the painting back to her. However, they were unable to pull the painting off the wall. She left with a promise to return the next day. True to her words, the spirit returns the next day. She shares with them the story of her dearest's past and how he ended up in the picture.
One day, Natsume started coughing and they found out that it was due to the picture. It had manifested itself into his wall and was feeding on Natsume's energy. A furious Nyanko tried to attack the picture but Natsume stood in the way and got hurt himself instead. While he was unconscious, he had a dream of the the spirit's past when she was together with her dearest.
The spirit regretted the fact that she was causing hurt to Natsume who has shown her such hospitality that she decided to destroy the painting. She admits that she has realized that her dearest was long gone but had liked the idea of him being with her still. Natsume manages to persuade her not to burn the painting and to think of another solution.
However, days go by and still they couldn't find a way to pull the painting off the wall. In the meantime, Natsume was getting sicker and sicker. Not able to see Natsume suffer any longer, the spirit resolved to burn the painting. Before that, she wanted to paint the branches with sakura leaves like how it was in the days she spent with her dearest. Natsume lent her a hand and together they painted the branches with sakura blossoms. That night, Natsume had a dream that the spirit and her dearest was reunited. The next day, he couldn't see the man in the picture anymore and it came off easily from the wall.
